They’re probably appearing all around you—New Year’s Resolutions.
“I’m going to lose weight.”
“I’m going to be on time.”
“This is my year to get organized.”
I’ve joined a gym and I’m going to go three times each week.”
What do all these New Year’s Resolutions have in common? That’s easy: they will all be forgotten in a few weeks. In their place will be old habits, old results and the same old uneasy feeling of guilt and failure.
Ditch the Resolutions…
Making New Year’s resolutions is such a strong tradition in our culture that it is unusual to find someone who doesn’t make some kind of decision to change when the New Year rings in.
We are recommending that you ditch the resolution and join the revolution!
2019 is going to be different. You aren’t going to fall for the same traps and false promises and hopes.
Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail
Lack of vision and planning are two of the biggest reasons that New Year’s Resolutions fail. We are creatures of habit. Your habits are like highways that your brain enjoys traveling. The road is familiar and it requires little energy. Your brain is wired to choose the path of least resistance to save energy, changing habits is not just a simple act of making a decision.
How to ditch the resolution and start the revolution!
Let me give you a few tips to make sure that you suceed this year.
- Pick one. Choose one specific area that you would like to change, and focus on that area for several weeks.
Start small. Set a goal, and then break it down into manageable chunks.Don’t try to go to the gym 6 days a week. Consistently go 3 days a week for a month. The next month go 4 days a week and progressively add workouts. “Inch by inch it’s a cinch. Yard by yard it is hard.”
- Plan for roadblocks. The solution is to anticipate rough times and have a strategy in place to deal with it.
- Make it visual. Get a large calendar and hang it in a prominent place. Every day that you successfully fulfill your new habit, make a big, red X on that date. Having a visual cue of your past success will motivate you to keep working on those new neural pathways.
- Be clear on your “why” If you don’t have a strong “why” in front of you, you will not achieve the life change that you desire. If you aren’t tired and disturbed about your current poor condition and health it won’t be enough motivation to change. Decide that enough is enough. Decide that you will not be overweight and weak and out of shape for one more day!
- Accept the facts. There is never ever ever going to be a time that you don’t need to work out. There is no finish line. Everyday you are going to get older. Everyday your metabolism is slowing down, Everyday your bones and joints are wearing out. The only way to combat this is with a consistent exercise and nutriton plan.
- Stop believing things you know are not true. You know that 2, 4 or 6 weeks is not enough time to undo years of no exercise and bad food. You know there is no pill you can take that will magically melt fat. There is no cream or wrap or drink that will fix your poor habits. Remember, nothing works unless you do.
- Be realistic. You are probably not going to set all time personal lifting records or lose massive amounts of weight or gain huge amounts of muscle in a month. Remember, this a journey not a destination. Afterall, I am all for optimistic thinking as long as it doesn’t cross over into impractical wishful thinking.
- Don’t compare. Do not under any circumstances measure your progress against other people. Every person is unique and has different potential and capabilities. Don’t forget, The only person you are trying to be better than is yourself last week or last month.
The good news is that while the old habit circuitry in your brain will never go away, you can build new habits that will eventually become as strong as the old ones.When this happens, you have not just made and kept a New Year’s Resolution. Rather, you have changed your life.
